When we hear the word ‘holy’ or holiness in our home we may think of a restricted home with lots of do’s and don’ts. However having a holy home, one set apart for Christ is the only way to a peaceful, safely guarded home!
The word ‘holy’ in Hebrew is ‘Kodesh’ from the root word ‘Kadash’. This means something so beautiful- it means ‘set apart’. We all have things we set aside for specific purposes for example, a work phone or home phone, a pair of shoes specifically for going out etc. The same is for ‘holiness’ except it is specifically attributed to what is set apart for God.
This makes those things set apart for God sacred. This is why God says so many times for us to be holy.
Leviticus 19:2
“Speak to all the congregation of thepeople of Israel and say to them, tYoushall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.
Leviticus 20:7
Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 20:26
You shall be holy to me, wfor I theLORD am holy and have separated you fromthe peoples, that you should be mine.
Leviticus 21:8
You shall sanctify him, for he offersthe bread of your God. He shall be holy toyou, for I, the LORD, who sanctify you, am holy.
Exodus 19:6
and you shall be to me a kingdom ofpriests and a holy nation.’ These are thewords that you shall speak to the people ofIsrael.”
1 Peter 1:16
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Thessalonians 4:7
For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.
When we set our home aside as a sacred place for God, it becomes holy. This means that we consciously make it a place for fellowship with Him. We do not allow the unholy things that He hates into our homes whether that be wordly music, idols, sinful materials and books and items that are impure. You can ask The Holy Spirit to reveal those things to you and find out through reading His Word.
It also goes deeper than just getting rid of all the unholy things – things that are set aisde for satan’s use. It is also about recognising our homes are a place where we want God’s presence to fill and so is set apart for His use so we consecrate it to Him daily and ask Him to be in charge.
Being perfect will not happen but being intentional is key. We become aware of His presence when we intentionally make our homes holy. You will notice that when you choose not to argue, listen or watch things that do not glorify Him, you will feel more of His presence, peace, tranquility in your home.
The more conscious and intentional you are to make Jesus the foundation, head and centre of your home, you will experience His rule, His blessings and His peace.
Adam and Eve made that choice to shut God out of their home – Eden- a place set apart for fellowship with God. They made a convenant with Satan instead- they then could not have access to all the freedom, blessings and beauty of God’s presence. The beauty is that whenever we sin or make mistakes when we run to Him (not from Him) He covers us as He did with Adam and Eve in His redemptive blood so that we can always live in His presence.
So, the starting point is always with our personal relationship with God. Naturally, where He is becomes sacred and Holy. Eden is still a location you can visit geographically but it is not the sacred place where God dwells. Sources say that it is located somewhere near Iraq and Iran around the Persian Gulf.
Our Creator chose to dwell within us so we can be with Him at all times. He placed that garden in our hearts. We see from the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:3-23) our hearts are that garden. He has fellowship with us in our heart. We also see this in That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, (Ephesians 3:17)
If we have that communion with Him, our environments will reflect that. If we ourselves are set apart for God, our lifestyle and homes will reflect that.
This is why Jesus came, He created the first home and through His sacrifce, He a home for us in Him and He dwells in us. This happens when just as you would to a neighbour or friend, open up the door- to open up the door of our hearts to Jesus who is knocking.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. Revelations 3:20
How beautiful! The King of Kings, Creator of the universe wants fellowship with us in our hearts! Jesus always visited homes of people who were rejected by society and perhaps never felt worthy of such visitation. We see that Jesus visited Zaccheus’ home, Mary, Martba and Lazarus’s home and many more.
By inviting the Holy Spirit into your heart and home on a daily basis, His presence of joy, peace, comfort will define the atmosphere.
We must be intentional about the Lord being the number one guest we host daily. Oh the wonderful encounters we will have! I can testify of many when I make this my intention.
So let’s start today- it makes all the difference and a ‘holy home’.
